What does a hair transplant cost in the US? Every published price we found

US hair transplant pricing is mostly unpublished: across the 23 clinics in our ten-city index, only 3 publish any figure. The published numbers as of August 2026: $5 per graft for FUT and $6 for FUE with a 1,000-graft minimum (Raleigh market); a starting price of $4,000 and an FUE range of $8,000–18,000 (two Charlotte practices). Every other total in this market is produced inside a consultation — as rate × graft count + whatever the clinic bundles in.

How a transplant total is actually built

Every quote reduces to the same arithmetic: per-graft rate × graft count, plus bundling. The rate is business; the graft count is medicine — it should come from a physician's evaluation of your loss pattern and donor area. The bundling (anesthesia, follow-up visits, PRP add-ons) is where two identical-looking quotes quietly diverge.

Stage of lossTypical graft rangeAt the one published US rate ($5–6/graft)
Hairline recession800 – 1,500$4,000 – $9,000
Frontal third1,500 – 2,500$7,500 – $15,000
Front + crown2,500 – 4,000+$12,500 – $24,000+, often staged

Graft ranges are indicative planning figures, not a diagnosis; the dollar column simply multiplies them by the one published per-graft rate in our index as a calibration exercise. Your number requires an evaluation.

The three substitutes clinics show instead of prices

Financing — “as low as $259/month” (a real example from our Nashville comparison) is a payment plan, not a total. Payment plans — referenced without figures in several markets we reviewed. “All-inclusive” claims — meaningful only once you know what is included and what the total is. None of the three is a price; all three are answered by the same request: the estimated total for my case, in writing.

The pricing pattern the ISHRS warns about

One pattern deserves its own paragraph: the flat offer to harvest “as many grafts as possible” for one price. The ISHRS lists it among predatory-pricing markers because it reverses the clinical logic — the deal determines the graft count instead of the diagnosis. A legitimate quote starts from an evaluated count; a package starts from a number that maximizes the invoice. If a consultation opens with the package, the second opinion is worth its cost.

Cost questions

What is the average cost of a hair transplant in the US in 2026?

There is no verifiable national average, because almost no clinic publishes prices — in our ten-city index, 3 of 23 reviewed clinics publish any figure. The published numbers span $5–6 per graft (Raleigh market), a $4,000 starting price and an $8,000–18,000 FUE range (both Charlotte). Any site quoting a precise national average is estimating from surveys, not from published clinic prices.

Why do so few clinics publish hair transplant prices?

The defensible reason: the total depends on graft count, and graft count follows from a physician’s diagnosis of your loss pattern and donor area. The less defensible effect: patients cannot calibrate quotes before a sales conversation. Our index tracks price transparency as its own column for exactly this reason.

Is financing from $259 a month the same as a price?

No. A monthly payment is a payment plan, not a total — one clinic in our index shows financing “as low as $259/month” and no procedure price. Before discussing financing, get the total in writing; if financing carries interest, ask for the total cost of credit as a separate number.

What is the ISHRS warning about package pricing?

The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery flags flat offers to harvest “as many grafts as possible” for one price as a predatory pattern, because it inverts diagnosis and treatment: the deal sets the graft count instead of the evaluation. A quote should start from your diagnosed graft count, not from a package.
